'High School Musical 2' Breaks Ratings Records

Zac Efron and company go to the head of the class with their highly-anticipated sequel.

'High School Musical 2' graduated with ratings honors Friday night as the Disney Channel sequel became the most watched basic cable telecast of all time. The highly anticipated movie, starring ZAC EFRON and VANESSA HUDGENS, debuted with 17.24 million viewers.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the previous record holder was a "Monday Night Football" game that aired on ESPN last September, which averaged 16 million viewers. What's more, according to Nielsen Media Research, 'Musical 2' was the most-watched program on TV since the season finale of FOX's hit drama "House" on May 29 brought in 17.26 million viewers.

But the records don't stop there. The Hollywood Reporter adds that 'Musical 2' ranked as the most-watched TV telecast ever in kids 6-11 (6.1 million) as well as the most-watched entertainment telecast ever (and the second-highest-rated overall, behind only the 2004 Super Bowl) among tweens 9-14 (5.9 million).

It's also being reported that the number of viewers could have actually been even higher since many kids and their parents held viewing parties Friday night.

Ever since the original aired in 2006, 'High School Musical' has become quite the successful franchise -- spawning DVDs, CDs and concerts.
